He does a great job of providing a pragmatic approach to dating in the 21st century all while continually pointing back to scripture. I’ve heard so many of JP’s thoughts in relationships through his podcast “Becoming Something,” but this book really lays out how to date well as a Christian. JP does a great job of writing on a topic that is not seen in the Bible, but applies lots of biblical concepts throughout. Specifically, I appreciated his emphasis on the priority of both parties being fully devoted to Christ and prioritizing that over anything else.

I will applaud this author for adding therapy because we need to normalize therapy. This story was my least favorite in the series. While We Were Dating is a cute and fun read that tackles serious issues, such as anxiety and mental health. While I enjoyed it, I wish I had felt more connected to the characters. When I saw that the hero in While We Were Dating was Ben, Theo’s younger brother, I was so excited.

I actually kissed dating goodbye after I got married . However, this book really is a challenge to teens and younger adults (college/young singles) to rethink their mindset of the ‘dating’ culture. Some will cringe in reading this ideology for the first time, but when contimplating how to protect your own holiness and the purity of others, it makes more sense. The Bible does not say, “THOU SHALT NOT DATE” but it does call us to holiness and to protect the purity of others. This is a practical book to present and different approach to developing godly relationships that may lead to marriage based on Scriptural truths.

That binary is a bit unfair, but it’s largely true, I think. Take any character or story in the bible, then offer that literalist reading as the appropriate method of living and thinking in the present age. What does God think about sex and how we should participate in it? Find anyone in the bible who had sex or thought about sex, then take their story at face value. I really appreciated that this book has a firm biblical grounding into relationships, and I often found myself agreeing enthusiastically to its advice, as it matched many of my own conclusions along those lines.

To be honest, I would start with The Devotion System first then move on to Text Chemistry. I find it to be easier if you address your personal issues first before figuring things out with another person. Amy North covers both stages of dating and relationships equally well.

Her work features regularly in publications including theFinancial Times,The Spectatorand theGuardian. The book I’m thinking of is Mary Gaitskill’s This is Pleasure, which absolutely floored me. I think it was the best thing I read about #MeToo.

There was a pretty scathing review of The Rules in The Times and I read it and thought–wait a second, the author is happily married. How dare she judge people when she had no idea what it was like! She talked about how she could show her difficult side to her partner and I thought, YES, we all want to be able to show our true authentic selves to our partners! For me, I have more or less now written my own rules, because some of the Rules are pretty ridiculous, but a few I have kept.

I also think this book focused so much on Anna and her career and we were left with not really a whole lot about Ben or his current job. He would just constantly call into work and say he was “working from home” when he was really just doing stuff with Anna. I would have liked Ben centered more as a character instead of everything revolving around Anna. His storyline with his family just felt like a weird addition that wasn’t really connected to the rest of the story. While this wasn’t a bad book by any means, I wasn’t completely captured by the story. Funny how there are practically no rule books for men in regard to finding the woman of their dreams.

I know a lot of people hate this book now, but I don’t. I’m a firm believer that there is no cookie-cutter way of dating. Everyone’s story is different, yet, this book came off as if it is the ONLY way to do things. I’m not saying that the book is completely wrong, it brings up a few good points, but ultimately…I don’t know that any book can tell you how to date or how to live.
