What is an nfo file and how do I open it?

NFOs with elaborate ANSI art may need to use CP437 text-encoding, where-as any other NFO can get away with just about
any encoding. However, some applications or websites may require
your NFO to be a specific text-encoding, which is usually either CP437 or UTF-8. Within the Music Info section, the most
important sections are Title and
Artist, but you should try to fill in
as much information as you can.

The System Information program file is called Msinfo32.exe. If you have the latest version of GetDiz installed and the problem persists, select it as the default program to be used to manage NFO on your device. The process of associating file formats with default application may differ in details depending on platform, but the basic procedure is very similar. There is a strong association between .nfo files and illegal pirated software ‘releases’ by various pirate (warez, or crack) groups.

As of 2019, NFO files can still be found in many ZIP archives. In modern-day warez NFO files, a large ASCII art logo is frequently shown at the top, followed by textual information below. Before Windows 95 was introduced, NFO files also sometimes used ANSI-escape sequences to generate animated ASCII art (ANSI art). These animations, however, required ANSI.SYS to be loaded by the DOS shell. If the user’s computer wasn’t already configured to load the ANSI.SYS driver, viewing ANSI art required reconfiguring and rebooting.

This form
contains information related to the uploading
(posting) of the file to be shared. In our
example, I have specified my name, the URL of
my Web site, the date, and the newsgroup to
which we are going to post the file. Before
you do any work, pull down the View
menu and select what is .nfo file the Tree option. This
will display the information in a a
hierarchical (tree-like) format that is easy
to understand. One important feature of GetDiz is that it
especially good at rendering ASCII ART,
that is, pictures created by using the printable
characters of the Ascii code.

Opening NFO files

However, you will find that
reading NFO files works best with a special-purpose
NFO-display program. In our example, we are sharing the file
steal-this-film-2.avi, which contains a
video entitled
Steal This Film, Part II. So along with
the various other files (RAR, SFV, PAR2), we
should also include an NFO file named
steal-this-film-2.nfo. It’s an acronym or short form for info or information.

We have identified four NFO openers that are compatible with this specific type of NFO file. NFO files have multiple uses, and Archive Info is one of them. Windows.edb files | Thumbs.db files | Desktop.ini file | DLL and OCX files | Index.dat file | Swapfile.sys, Hiberfil.sys & Pagefile.sys. Although they are safe to open on your computer, you should be very
careful when clicking on any links found within the file.

File Extension Search

Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data. The file contains text explaining how to use the software, software release notes, and information about the group that cracked and distributed the program. They are for delivering release information about the media, such as the title, release date, authorship, etc. One idea is to
search for files similar to the one you want
to share, see which newsgroups you find them
in, and choose one of those groups for posting
your own file. Alternatively, you can always
post to alt.binary.boneless, a very
active newsgroup used for all types of file
sharing. (The name boneless has no
particular meaning.) We’ll talk more about
this important topic later in the tutorial.

First, I found the URL
of the Web page that has information about the
video. Second, I looked up the movie on the
IMDB (Internet Movie Database) Web site, so I
could specify its rating. Normally, of course, you will want to post
your files to a newsgroup where other people
will find them and download them. There are
many binary groups used for file sharing, so
you will have to pick the one you think is
best.

NFO File Extension

In such ‘releases,’ an .nfo file would serve the purpose of a combined read-me, ASCII art demo and a sort of press statement. In order to fill out the forms, you will need
technical information about the file you are
planning to share. Like Cool Beans NFO Creator,
MediaInfo is free software. Whenever you
upload a binary file large enough to be broken
into parts, you should also include a special
information file. Such files contain plain
text and are given the file extension
nfo (for “information”).

Navigate to your file sharing directory
(folder), select the media file for which you
want information (in our example
steal-this-film-2.avi), then click on
the Open button. NFO file is similar to other popular information file types
such as README that are included in program installation packages. NFO file format is used by system information files for pirated software (warez). NFO file stores information about given software, typically the details of said software and group that illegaly distributes the warez. Such organizations are also known as warez groups or crack groups.

Sometimes in order to access files user need to have administrative privileges. Log out of your current account and log in to an account with sufficient access privileges. If the NFO file was sent to you by someone else, ask this person to resend the file to you. It is possible that the file has not been properly copied to a data storage and is incomplete and therefore cannot be opened. If the NFO file has been downloaded from the internet only partially, try to redownload it.
